ResCare Community Living Direct Support Professional (DSP) Steven Anderson has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Terre Haute, IN.
Steven supports a diverse group of clients with intellectual disabilities. One of these clients was reluctant to engage with others and was attached to his routine. Steven worked closely with this individual, eventually forming a connection with him and encouraging him to open up. On one occasion, Steven was even able to convince the client to dance.
Developing relationships is one of Steven’s many strengths as a DSP. Another one of his clients did not socialize well with many individuals and showed preference toward female staff. Steven persisted in his efforts to bond with this client and is now one of his favorite staff members.
Program Manager LaTaye Areje says, “Steven is someone you can count on to come to work and do above and beyond what is expected.” Currently, Steven is helping one of his clients learn how to read. This person enjoys looking at magazines but is unable to read them on his own. Steven will read the words to the client, helping him learn in the process.
