When you ask Jennifer Wells what the foundation of her work as a DSP is, she will tell you, “It’s about giving each client a piece of the world, no matter what they can or can’t do. They deserve to feel the sun, to feel the breeze from a swing ride, and the smells of the circus.” She excels at promoting person-centered plans for the clients at her high-need home. Jennifer supports every client she works with by fostering their ability to be their authentic self. She pays attention to clients and helps build programs based on their specific characteristics.
One of her clients has an extensive history of unsafe behaviors, including dangerous pica episodes, where she compulsively eats non-food items. This client had several unsuccessful attempts to be placed within other operations. Jennifer learned everything she could about this client, including her behaviors and the psychology of pica. She asked questions, went to medical appointments, and did extensive research so she could support her in the best way possible. Despite the long days, Jennifer never wavered. She showed up daily and set the client up for successful moments that eventually led to successful days. Through Jennifer’s advocacy, safe clothing was introduced to reduce the opportunity for pica episodes. It took a while for the team to understand how she communicated her needs and wants, but Jennifer learned how to communicate with her quickly. It went from days of being unable to leave the home to spending hours on the patio, visiting the duck park, and visiting the day center. Finally, she grew into doing what she truly loved – interacting with people. She goes to the movies, visits the circus, and goes holiday shopping with her family. She does it all with Jennifer’s support. She has been able to go on extended trips with her family without additional supervision. The family follows the thoughtful person-centered plan to keep her safe. Her family is delighted with the change and the extended time spent with their loved one. It is also incredible when the client comes to the office to show off her new outfits while asking for big hugs. This success is a testimony to Jennifer because she wanted more for her client.
Jennifer’s compassion is unmatched. We rely upon her focus and ability to spot and address changes with clients daily. Jennifer’s leadership sets a high example in the home and throughout the entire operation. She approaches every day as a DSP with all the love the clients deserve, and her legacy will benefit people for years to come.
