ResCare Community Living Direct Support Professional Shirley Ross has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Martinsburg, WV.
Shirley won the 2025 ANCOR DSP of the Year Award for West Virginia. For almost 30 years, she has dedicated her life to supporting her clients. Through her efforts, clients have been reunited with family members, joined social events in their local areas, and discovered or maintained a religious community.
Shirley has a way of breaking down seemingly complicated situations. She gains inspiration from past success stories and tailors her service to the specific needs of those she supports. One of her clients was often written off as “a grumpy old man” who was set in his ways and resistant to support. Through her time with him, Shirley established a meaningful rapport and was often the driving force behind teaching gentler ways of responding to others.
For another individual, as caregivers shifted, Shirley stepped up to make sure that detailed information was maintained in his plan regarding his relationships. She was aware of his friendship with an individual from church and wanted to make sure he continued to have routine visits with them. Losing this connection would have been difficult for the client, but Shirley ensured it will be maintained in the years to come.
