ResCare Community Living Direct Support Professional Victor Akinlolu has been Working Smart and Doing Good in Forked River, NJ.
Victor is one of three winners of this year’s LEGACY of Care Caregiver of the Year award. His longevity with the organization has allowed him to excel while also mentoring new employees who respect and admire his judgment in various situations.
One of Victor’s clients has physical disabilities and cannot always make his needs known. The individual was shy and self-conscious about his limitations, but Victor spent extra time with him, patiently encouraging the client to use his voice. Over time, this person found a true friend and ally in Victor and began to confide in him and discuss personal matters. With improved confidence and Victor’s support, the individual’s speech improved significantly.
After a different resident at the group home was hospitalized, Victor regularly visited him and communicated with the physicians. When no initial diagnosis could be made, the client began preparing for discharge. Worried about the lack of information, Victor went to the hospital. He informed the doctors that he had known the individual for more than 10 years, and he believed something was wrong. This led to additional testing, which resulted in an emergency surgery the next day to remove the client’s gallbladder.
Congratulations, Victor! Your Communication and advocacy not only keep everyone in the know but help the individuals in your home meet their goals and receive needed care. Thank you for your work helping others live their best lives.
WORK SMART. DO GOOD.
